I have been with Kemp's Flooring since 2002 and previously taught six grade in the Huntsville City Schools. I specialize in helping customers with their Area Rug selections.

I often have customers ask what size area rug is appropriate for their room? How to choose the right size rug for your space is often difficult, especially when rugs can be rather expensive. Many times a client will think a 5x7 or 6x9 will work because it costs less, but it often makes the whole space appear chopped up. Spending a little more for an 8x10 or even a 9x12 is often a much better investment.

Here are some tips to help you decide — measure the size of your seating area and go one size up from that. If your budget is tight and your room is small it is okay to have a smaller rug that floats in front of all the furniture, especially if the sofa is up against a wall. But if your furniture is floating or if your room is really large, get a larger rug so that it will pull the room together, and not chop it up. Position the rug to the room dimensions. If you have a long rug, orient it lengthwise. Typically a sofa looks better on the longer side of the rug.

Should the legs of the sofa be on or off the rug?
I get this question very often and my advise is to be consistent. It's perfectly okay to have front legs of chairs on and back legs off. Square rugs are for square rooms only. Round rugs can go in the foyer or in kids rooms. Kemp's has a large variety of area rugs at all price points and we'd be happy to help you select the perfect one!

Managing the warehouse is a big job! I have trucks rolling in all day and almost everyday of the week, with carpet, pad, hardwood and area rugs. I also have customers picking up their material. It's important to keep track of everything and make sure the material is not damaged in the shipping process. I love my job.

I'm originally from Southern California, and have a history of working in retail Management. Most recently I managed a high end stone and tile showroom in Palm Springs, CA. I moved to Huntsville in 2010 and was lucky to find and open position at Kemp's. I am currently the Sales Manager.

The question I get asked the most often is: How quickly can you install my new floor? Once you have a signed contract, Kemp's can usually install your new flooring with in 2-3 weeks. Keep in mind there are always exclusions, it just depends on the scale of the project and if the material is readily available.

If you are starting or thinking about a tile project: First step would be to stop in and look at our beautiful showroom. We offer all colors, textures and sizes of tile. Our staff is happy to assist you with selections, including tile layout or patterns. You may take samples home to be sure that the tiles coordinate with all of the other surfaces in your space. Once you've made your selections and have had a measurement, you'll sign a contract and leave a deposit. On installation day, you will have moved all of your breakables and personal items. Tile will take more than one day, depending on how big the project is. You will want to wait 24 hours before moving back on your floor.

Grew up in Hazel Green, Al, and graduated from Athens State with a B.S. in Behavioral Science.

I have two daughters and one grandson. I joined the Kemp's family in 2003 and love my job and my co-workers.

The question I get asked most: Why and how did you come up with more square footage on your estimate for carpet? Flooring is not an exact science. Most customers measure the room from baseboard to baseboard. They don't consider that the flooring will need to continue through the doorways and under the baseboards. If there is not enough carpet it will shut the job down.

This basically will start the process over — we must reorder the correct amount of carpet, reschedule the install date and leave the room in disarray. It is better to do it the right from the beginning, even if it will cost a little more. It will be a win-win experience for everyone.

Originally from Arkansas, my husband and I were transferred to Huntsville in 1986 from the Chicago area. I have been in small business management for over 30 years and have been with Mr. Kemp since the inception of Kemp's Flooring 25 years ago. We had also worked together at another company for three years prior to opening Kemps. My husband and I were blessed with two children who are grown and married. I have one grandson who is the light of our lives.

Financing: Financing can be confusing with all of the programs being offered. I carefully explain the promo terms and if the contract is not paid within the terms, what interest rate they will be charged. To further inform the customers, I send their finance receipt along with information on how to manage their account online.
